Informative Questions

Informative questions are used to ask about qualities, people, time, etc. They consist of who, what, where, when, why, which, and how, that are usually called WH-questions. Most WH-questions begin with; Question Word + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb.

Let’s study about that!

1.      Who

“Who” is used in questions as the subject of the verb, usually the people.

Example:

o   Who is the owner of this car?

o   Who are they in the school yard?

o   Who are you going to visit?

2.      What

“What” is used in questions to ask about things or activities.

Example:

o   What does she makes for the final assignment?

o   What are you drinking?

o   What is that?

Other types of “what” question:

a.      What kind of/type of

“What kind of/type of” is used to ask about specific thing or characteristics.

Example:

o   What kind of clothes do you like?

o   What kind of animal do you hate?

o   What type of car do you drive?

b.      What time

“What time” is used to ask for a specific time.

Example:

o   What time is it?

o   What time the bookstore will open?

o   What time does the movie begin?

c.       What … like

“What … like” is used to ask about characteristics of something or somebody?

Example:

o   What was the new math’s teacher like?

o   What is your little brother like?

o   What is Mrs. Farah like?

3.      Where

“Where” is used to ask about places.

Example:

o   Where is my phone?

o   Where do you come from?

o   Where did you go on your holiday?

4.      When

“When” is used for asking about a general or specific time.

Example:

o   When will you go to South Korea?

o   When was your sister born?

o   When does the movie end?

5.      Why

“Why” is used for asking about reasons.

Example:

o   Why are you look so pale?

o   Why are they play football in the street?

o   Why can’t I play chess?

6.      Which

“Which” is used to ask about things, especially choices with a small number of possible answers.

Example:

o   Which CD album did you buy?

o   Which dress did you wear?

o   Which your father in this picture?

7.      How

“How” is used to ask in what why.

Example:

o   How do you make the handicrafts?

o   How many student in your class?

o   How much does the skirt cost?
